Dan got up early (middle of the night) and headed over to the other campsite. After waking them up, the four of them went and climbed a peak. I dug a bigger snow circular thing (it’s a technical term) with a bench to keep us out of the wind that was still blowing hard. Dan came back earlier than expected and Jack wanted to move closer to the next peak, so we moved a few km.
Again, the skiers were quick, the walkers slow. The wind was now at our backs, easing the walk and making some really neat patterns on the surface of the glacier. All the data we had from the previous trips said that the glacier was very safe. In one place Bill put his foot though, about 10 minutes later I fell though to my chest – while in polypro and bare handed. It got a little cold waiting for Bill to come back and get my pack off me, which was required before I could safely climb get out. I was pretty cold by the time I finally crawled out, and it took a while to warm up.
We got to the camp here Dan and Jack had their tent up. Bill and I set ours near theirs, and I dug some big walls as the wind had really picked up. The other group was still sleeping at their site after climbing the other peak. During the “night”, the wind caused the snow to really blow around Jack/Dan/Tom’s tent, and they had to get up and shovel out several times. Very late, the other group showed up and set up a few yards away.
