Home About Me House & Yard Trips

One of the most memorable trips I've ever been on was an expedition to a remote section of Ellesmere Island National Park, Nunavut, Canada.  I'll remember this trip as one of a unique few in my lifetime for many reasons, most of which I can't put into words.  Overwhelming beauty, vast (literally) untouched wilderness, utter isolation...  A particularly memorable experience sun doing ovals in the sky for three weeks - overhead sunlight 24x7.

Ellesmere Island, located 800 kilometers from the north pole and 25 km from Greenland is about as far north as one can go on land, with the exception of a couple of islands in Russia.  This may be about the least visited national park in the world - the year we were there non-government/research visitation was expected to be about 60.  We were the 7th know group of explorers to ever visit the major valley of our 100 traverse from a glacial ski-plane landing to a gravel "runway" pick up.  Our group of 8 took annual visitation that year from the typical about 50 to an astounding 60.  We were the first climbers in many years (decades) to hike on the glaciers we were on, and climbed mountains never before climbed.
